This Bur-gundian art appeared and disap-peared with the power of theDukes; it was the result of a bril-liant political phase rather thanof ethnical characteristics. It isto be explained by the position ofa feudal family and its suzeraintyover the Netherlands. Thewealthy cities of Flanders, reservoirsof skilled craftsmen, had furnishedpainters and sculptors for the Parisof Charles V and Charles VI,before providing them for the Dijon of Philip the Good.During the first half of the fifteenth century Paris was in a stateof anarchy, and in the hands of the English, and Burgundyalone was able to profit by the labours of Flemish craftsmen.
